Ullapool, Scotland. 16-23 August 1997
Nine hardy souls pitched up on 16 August for
the mini-Meths with Axeman and CP arriving later in the week. A house on the
sea front had been hired for the week as a base of operations. The format this
year was a mixture of either eating in or going out to a restaurant as decided
in the morning.
After a day settling
in, the first outing was to a mountain called Stac Pollaidh. It is not big in
mountainous terms but it gains its reputation as a scrambler's paradise and for
superb views of the Sutherland landscape. An enjoyable Sunday afternoon was had
by Polevault, Socks, El Puerco and Mad Mike sampling the various routes on the
mountain. The rest of the group took a gentle stroll into the Inver Pollaidh
Nature Reserve to the shores of Loch Scionnaiscaig.
Monday was a lazy day
for most of the party apart from Socks and Mad Mike who went to explore the
scrambling routes on Cul Mor. The highlight of the day was AMLH asking two
Italian dolly birds when taking their photograph: 'Do you focus first?' It is
enough to say that they did not reply.
Tuesday was spent
climbing a 3,000ft peak called Beinn Bearg and on arriving back at the house
Axeman had announced his arrival by dropping crushed McEwan's Export tins
through the open window. CP also pitched up.
On Wednesday the group
split up to do their own thing. Axeman toddled off to climb Conival and Ben
More Assynt. Polevault and Mad Mike went fishing. Socks went for a run in his
car and the rest took the boat to Stornoway to visit the Outer Hebrides for the
day.
So far the weather had
been superb, bright sun and very warm, but on Thursday, the day of the Three
Peaks Walk on the Quinag, the weather became unsettled but as it turned out, it
remained fine but with a strong wind on the summits, the rain arriving as we
reached the cars at the end of the day.
Stuart and Christopher
attempted the An Teallach ridge on the Friday but turned back after climbing to
the start of the ridge due to inclement weather.
The week ended on the
Saturday and all those who attended would wish to thank Rhoda, Jane and Stuart
for the excellent meals they provided for the starving mob on the evenings that
we catered for ourselves.
Some bright spark put
a picture of HE in the window of the house. This caused great amusement to the
tourists who passed by who all thought it was a picture of Nelson Mandela.
Participants: Eric "Polevault" Scott
(leader), Valerie Scott, Stuart "Socks" Leslie, Rhoda Leslie,
Christopher "El Puerco" Leslie, Brian "AMLH" Sayers, Jane
Sayers, Mike "Mad" Petzold, Verena "Muesli" Petzold,
Christina Petzold and last but not least Ian "Axeman" Mason, who but
for the grace of God nearly pitched up a week early.
