Hawes, North Yorkshire. 30 September — 3 October 1992
Participants: Ian "Mad Axeman" Mason,
John "Koenig von Mulanje" Killick and Mike "Mad" Petzold. Sadie and Mrs Petzold senior manned the
Naafi wagon.
Only three stalwarts
turned up for the mini meet that arose out of the happy afterglow of the 1992 annual reunion. The meet was based at Hawesin the North
Riding of Yorkshire.
The main walk started
at Cotterdale, from there to Great Shunner Fell (2,340ft), then to Aisgill for
lunch. Suitably fortified, the
party tackled Wild Boar Fell (2,324ft) and back along the ridge over Swarth
Fell (2,235ft) to the Moorcock Inn. The impending darkness and the comforts
of the hostelry cut short the walk. The remaining two miles to Cotterdale
will have to wait for another day.
Bad weather and low
cloud put paid to any ideas next day of an ascent of the Howgill Fells. Instead the car was taken for a walk in
Wensleydale, then the trio walked themselves the magnificent path along the
Swale between Muker and Keld in the pouring rain.
It was a most
memorable meet in a really superb area of the Pennines.
Ian (Mad Axeman) Mason, President
[Although they didn't know it
at the time, this meet was the forerunner of the AWC – annual meets based
at Hawes.]
