Blantyre Three Peaks Walk.  27 June 1992

This year's "3 peaks" generated an unprecedented amount of enthusiasm, perhaps people wanted to take their minds off the economic gloom!

No less than 22 brave souls gathered in the Blantyre Sports Club car park at 5.00 a.m. and set off at a cracking pace to enjoy sunrise on Michiru.  Unfortunately for the first time ever the .summit was shrouded in mist and it was obvious that more "crud" was blowing in from the South East.

The 3 participants in the "3 peaks only" section joined the main party at Maria and Frank Johnstons' house in Chirimba which resembled a field hospital rather than a morning tea break!

As ever the assault on Ndirande saw a few strugglers and stragglers but everyone gathered at Kamuzu view point on time only to be driven on after a brief lunch stop in deteriorating weather conditions.  A depressing plod through a very wet Limbe saw hard weather gear being worn by most.

The final peak split the party into 2 main groups, one on top and one still taking tea at Soche School with three walkers playing hide and seek in the mist.  The mountain rescue radios proved very useful in co-ordinating the strung out walk and making sure everyone was accounted for.

The final gathering at Blantyre Sports Club revealed beaming faces and blistered feet but nothing could dampen the relief, elation and general euphoria as walkers, marshals, organisers found themselves all together for the first time in 12 hours.  The common goal was to get outside of a green!

A truly international flavour crept in this year with participants flying: in from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya (our very own Dave Harrison – Lord of the Great Ruo).
