Blantyre Three Peaks
Walk. 29 June 1991
Following the success
of last year's event which included a 'Three Peaks Only' section, the same
formula was used again, turning a one-time misery into a more cheerful social
event.
That is not to say the
event is any less gruelling but the cheerful banter tends to take the sting out
of those hated words too often spoken by you know who: 'OK, let's go, let's do
it', just when you want five minutes' more rest!
This annual trek
around Blantyre gives the regulars 12 hours to reflect on the changing
environment of the city, the villages, plantations and dwindling areas of
indigenous trees, in moonlight and sunshine.
The British High
Commissioner to Malawi, Nigel Wenban-Smith, joined the walk this year and
presented the club with five pocket radio sets to assist with Mountain Rescue.
Peter Garland ran a mobile patrol testing the units, and broadcasts from Frank
Kippax kept us entertained most of the day. "Midnight" Jack

Participants: Those who completed the full 42km
walk were: Katie Hick, Lisa Kuusipala, Toby Kibble, Mark Prothero, Geoff
Douglass, Dennis Lewis, John "Koenig von Mulanje" Killick, Tim Rump,
Simon "Scope" Cope and "Midnight" Jack Bannister.
