Blantyre Three Peaks Walk. 30 June 1990

Jack Bannister (Midnight Jack) writes that this year's marathon test of endurance took on a new look with the introduction of a "3 peaks only" event, the participants attempting to climb all 3 peaks but driving between each mountain.  There was a great deal of swapping and changing between the two groups, some doing less and others more than they originally planned.  They even inherited David Oliver from the 3 man HASH event which was badly affected by the relentless sun.

'l'hose completing the full 43 km, 3 peak walk were – Margie MacLachlan , Dennis McCann and Roger Giles (ail from Lilongwe), Gerry Steel, Bruce Martin, Dave and Janet Snow and Jack Bannister.  Those variously doing 3 peaks, 2 peaks, plus or minus the bits in between included Pat Royal, Gabriel Killick, Katy Hick (and sister Jeany from UK), Frank Kippax, Peter Garland, Jim Parrish, Peter Wrigley, Toby Kibble and Geof Douglas.

As usual the marshalls, Jim and Sue Hutson, Sue Cumberland and Wiggy ably assisted by Willard (his cook) and Gilbert (his driver) made the event go smoothly.  Grateful thanks for their support so necessary for the health and welfare of the participants.  Frank and Maria Johnston also deserve a mention for allowing the use of their premises yet again for our mid-morning stop prior to the grinding ascent of Ndirande, and Blantyre Sports Club for serving tea and greens at the end of the day.  It is always a pleasure when organising an event such as this to hear that everyone involved, including the marshals, claim to have thoroughly enjoyed the day.  Such events can only help to improve the fellowship within the Mountain Club.
