Programme
July 3rd: climb up to Dinas Bran
Hill fort 320 m. and on via the Clwydian Way and Valle Crucis Abbey (the ruins
were closed as we arrived after 4.00 p.m.), along the Llangollen Canal back to
our starting point.
July 4th: Llantysilio
Mountain: 3 peaks - Moel Morfydd 550 m.
then Moel y Gaer 504m and lastly Moel y Gamelin 557m. The walk started from near Rhewl, then up via
the Clwydian Way, we did the three peaks and then descended via Cymmo and Acer
Ddu, past the Sun Inn (alas, also closed) back to the starting point. We then drove down to the Horseshoe Falls,
admired them and the little church at Llantysilio (Robert Browning read the
lesson here at services during a ten-week stay towards the end of his life.)
July 5th: along the base of the
Eglwseg mountain (a long north-south limestone escarpment that follows a series
of scoops in the hillside), briefly up onto the escarpment, (around 350 m. and
down), returning via Trevor Uchaf and the Llangollen Canal back to Llangollen.
For a change we had NO rain in Wales and indeed the hot weather (the
freak heat wave we are still enjoying two weeks later) started on our last morning. Llangollen is a pretty town but more touristy
than say Brecon, as it is nearer the major conurbations of Manchester and
Liverpool. But it does have the river
Dee and some fine riverside walks, to wind down on after the peaks.
Photos to follow: a select METHS
meet and one enjoyed by the participants.
Cheers Up the Down.
