North Yorkshire, England. 1-4 June 2005
We discovered almost by accident that there was no proper report
on the 2005 North Yorkshire meet, but the announcement of the meet
instead. By contacting the participants (as
per some previous Green Lists!) we were able to obtain some hints on what
happened and the walks done. Our thanks
to Stephen Ward for extracts of his diary and to Neil Lawford and Brian Sayers
for their contributions. Impressive
memories and record keeping! Photos
courtesy of Brian.
Participants:
Dave and Judy Harrison, Neil Lawford, Ian and Sadie Mason, Brian and
Jane Sayers, Eric and Val Scott, Pauline and Stephen Ward.
Wednesday 1st June
Wards arrived at the
Fountain Hotel, Hawes, at 5.20 pm, to find Ian and Sadie, Eric and Val, Neil
Lawford, Brian and Jane already there.
Dave and Judy were staying in Motor Home and joined us for the evening
meal.
Thursday 2nd June
Ian (organiser, but still
recovering from an operation) and Sadie went home after breakfast.
Eric and Val, Dave, Brian, Neil, Stephen and Pauline drove to Keld and walked down to Muker using the path high on the west side of the river Swale. Visited the Farmers Arms for lunch (or beer/coffee stop) then returned the track on the east side of the river Swale to Keld. About 16 km. Rainy at times. Brian remembers masses of chaffinch on the ground at the end of the walk.
Friday 3rd June
Neil left after breakfast and
ran up Whernside from Chapel-le-Dale on his way home.
Eric and Val, Dave, Brian,
Stephen and Pauline went up Nine Standards Rigg (2'172 feet). Parked and left from near Ravenseat Farm (now
famous for the "Yorkshire Shepherdess")
11.00 to 13.30 plenty of
Peat Bog - observations of what Passendale must have been like were made.
13.30 to 14.15 lunch at Nine Standards Rigg. Brian comments: "Legend has it that there were once cairns or stone men 12 feet high there to protect against the Scots. More likely built by miners in their lunch breaks".
Return to cars and pub stop
in Muker. Mostly dry (the weather not
the pub!!)
Evening meal at Simonstone
Hall Hotel. "Very nice, a bit
pricey, but we enjoyed ourselves".
Saturday 4th June
Everyone left after
breakfast.
