10th Blantyre 3-Peaks Walk. 25th June 1994
The traffic in downtown Blantyre was hectic as
no less than 31 full distance participants, three part routers and one marshal
assembled under a bright moon at 0450 hrs in the morning.
A setting moon and rising sun saw everyone
safely through the Chilomoni short cut (ably led by Andy Crabb) and up and over
Michiru for breakfast inside the Michiru conservation lecture room (our thanks
to the Dept. of Parks and Wildlife).
The walkers soon split naturally into the fast,
medium and slow variety toiling under the sun (we whinged about it being wet
last year) through Swiya, Chirimba and Ndirande to the lunch stop. A
steep descent off an almost denuded Ndirande preceded the assault of the final
peak, Mount Soche, and the route march back to Blantyre Sports Club.
Everyone arrived safely in varying states of
health and maybe the best comment after "you have to be insane to do
this" was "The camaraderie and friendship is just
fantastic." Maybe that is why we do it.
The lesson for the Club could be – why don't we
have more social events?

Nobody would make it without the help of the support
team, so our heartfelt thanks to Susan Kraemer, Val Wallace, Verena Petzold and
Chris Leach (cheers for the beers Chris). Also our thanks to Bill Stark
for the use of the Landrover on some of the ever deteriorating roads.
